What a great idea! Writing a book about following in the footsteps of one of the greatest characters in literary history - Odysseus, he of Homer's The Odyssey fame! Just imagine sending in your tax return for that year: all those receipts for swooning around the Med, going on cruise ships, staying at ancient palaces ... please Mr Taxman, I'd like a refund for all those expenses!! Bliss!
The Odyssey is a great book and one that you can keep dipping back into to find new wonders and old friends. I never fail to be astonished by the breadth and imagination of it all. However, I'm not too sure whether I'll be tempted to dip into Harry Mount's tome in the near future - if at all. It left me with the feeling that perhaps he might need a small dose of Prozac or it's ilk, or perhaps some ongoing separation therapy or CBT?
Whilst greatly admiring his love of the Classics, and for the pearls of literary wisdom that he scatters throughout the book, I can't help but being left slightly melancholic by the end of his book.
I have no doubt though, that if only one person reads Harry's book and it leads them to reach for a copy of Homer's Odyssey, then Mr Mount can consider himself a success - which hopefully, should lift his spirits!
