Just when you think you've got it all under control.... along comes a PandemicWhen I was a little lad I lived through the Asian flu and the Hong Kong flu both of which spread around the world over 50 years ago killing millions of people. Strangely enough, there was no 'lock down' or closing of borders. Back in the middle of the last century when such things happened it was taken as a part of how the world went round! Perhaps there was more acceptance of uncertainty back then: there's no doubt that today, loss of control is a big issue with rising levels of anxiety and depression.
Yet despite the uncertainty and fear over the last 12 months the world has shown itself to be very adaptable and super-efficient at effecting positive change - just look at how our scientists have brought a number of effective Covid vaccines onto the market in 'warp speed' time! Now if only we could apply that to respect for our environment, tolerance of each other and accept that we only get one go at this life so why not aim to be the best you that you can be. Enough of the past - it's there to inform and guide us: my hope is that we'll pick out the best of it and carry it forward with us into the future. So what's next? My feeling is that we've been in an "Emperors new clothes" era where the magic of having 'enough' has led us to expect more! But has it made us any better? Has it made us more civilised and connected or more angry and resentful? We have made great strides with our respect for the environment, but we've only scratched the surface there. In my lifetime I've seen London shrouded in Smog, and if you fell in the Thames you'd die of poisoning rather than drowning. Now the air in London is cleaner and fish swim in the river! In my lifetime, as in yours, great things have and will change but your children and grandchildren may have a different take on that - so be warned! Which leads me on to the subject of tolerance. We live on one blue, beautiful planet: we are one people, we have one very short lifespan and we have far more in common with each other than we have differences. So when we extend a hand to one another, please don't make it a fist! Each and everyone of us has to opportunity to do one thing this year: Lets make #202-One GREAT
